In the world of email marketing, understanding bounces is crucial. When an email can’t be successfully delivered, it’s labeled as a Bounce 📩
Types of Bounces:
1️⃣ Hard Bounce:
This occurs when the email server permanently rejects an email.
Reasons include:
👉 User Unknown: The address doesn’t exist at the domain.
👉 Domain Unknown: The recipient domain doesn’t exist.
👉 Bad Address Syntax: Invalid email address
2️⃣ Soft Bounce:
A seemingly temporary condition causes the email server to reject the email.
Common reasons:
👉 Mailbox Full: Recipient’s mailbox is full.
👉 Inactive Account: Address temporarily unavailable.
👉 Temporary Domain Failure: Receiving domain is temporarily down.
3️⃣ Technical/Other Bounce:
These include:
👉 Server Too Busy: Receiving server overwhelmed.
👉 Data Format Error: Rejected due to formatting issues.
👉 Network Error: Connection lost during delivery.
Handling Bounces
Hard Bounces:
SFMC stops trying to deliver the specific email that bounced. It’ll retry with the next email (depending on subscriber status). After three hard bounces, SFMC sets the subscriber status to “Held,” preventing further emails to that address
Soft Bounces:
SFMC retries sending the email every 15 minutes for 72 hours (up to 288 tries). After retries, a subscriber appears as “Bounced.”
💡 Remember, as a user, you can’t control bounces directly, but understanding them helps optimize your email campaigns.
